To prepare educational videos into our lessons in the classroom, I almost always use YouTube to find the videos. It is very helpful to know that there are many other websites out there, that are alternatives to YouTube. In my research, I found two that were worth researching for use in our class.
Watch Know Learn
http://www.watchknowlearn.org/ was the first website that I would like to bring to your attenttion. It is another website full of videos, but these are educational videos only, so they are helpful to view for various classroom topics and content areas. Watch Know Learn has over 50,000 videos in 5,000 categories to choose from. You can search videos for holidays, math, science, history, just to name a few, and there are several videos under each of these categories.
Pros
1. There are thousands of useful videos to use for many topics in the classroom.
2. This site is strictly educational, so the videos are trusted and safe for students to search.
3. It is free for all users.
4. This site is very user- friendly.
Cons
1. Not all categories have age friendly videos for first graders (our audience).
2. There is only one video for listed under First Grade- Common Core.
3. Students must have internet access to reach this site away from the classroom,
Daily Motion
http://www.dailymotion.com/ca-en is the second largest video sharing website next to YouTube, so you can imagine that there are tons of videos on any subject. Just like on YouTube, you simply search for what you want to find a video for in the search tab, and a list of videos appear. This makes it very easy to search for videos to use in class.
Pros
1. Daily Motion is easy to use.
2. Daily Motion has a large amount of useful, educational videos.
3. Daily Motion is a great resource to use for visual learners, because they learn from the videos.
Cons
1. Daily Motion has a lot of content on it, so it would be very easy for students to watch inappropriate content.
2. Content would need to be watched and viewed ahead of time by teacher, to make sure that it meets educational needs.
3. If this site is used in the classroom with first graders, I would need closely monitor your searches and views, so that it is used for educational purposes only.
